What are keying systems?

Keying systems refer to the way locks and keys are configured to control access. On padlocks, it is the internal pins and cylinder configurations that determine which keys can open which padlocks.

Keyed Different (KD)

Keyed different is one of the most common keying systems in which each lock requires its own unique key. This means that a lock can only be opened by its own key, making it one of the most secure keying systems for individuals who only need a few locks. However, as more locks are needed, more keys will be needed as well. This system is perfect for anyone who may only need a few locks and doesn't mind carrying a few more keys.

Keyed Alike (KA)

Keyed alike is a common keying system that allows one key to open multiple locks. This makes it more convenient for individuals who have many locks, as they'd only need one key to open them all. This is especially useful when implementing a padlock with a door lock, such as using our 83-Series padlock with a Kwikset 5-Pin keyway, as the same key for your lock can be used for the front door, with the added convenience of not having to carry around more keys. These systems are typically found in construction sites for locking up tools, sheds, or materials, as well as residential properties for multiple household or outbuilding points.

Master Key (MK)

The master key system is a system used to establish hierarchical security, making it so that each lock has its own unique key, while also having a single "master" key that can override and open every lock in its group. This can be useful in the event an individual misplaces or loses their unique key, a manager or supervisor can still open the lock without needing to break it open. This system is commonly found in gyms or schools, such as those found in student & athlete's lockers.
